Everything is more fun in gummy form, right? Vitamins, medicines, fruit juice…my kids can’t get enough of them. And I have to say, I really enjoy that chewy texture myself.

Homemade elderberry gummies aren’t just yummy, they’re also like a little super food. Elderberries are amazing for immune support, and can actually promote healing when you’re sick.

I always like to have elderberry syrup on hand as we’re entering the dreaded flu season to give my family some protection for any viruses we might be exposed to. But I have been known to forget to be regular about giving it to them.

Having gummies in the fridge, my kids take care of reminding me to give everybody their dose of elderberries for the day. It’s also less messy than taking syrup!

This elderberry gummy recipe only calls for elderberry syrup (or juice), honey and gelatin. Doesn’t get much simpler than that!

I was very consistent in giving my family a daily dose of elderberries either as a syrup or in gummies through cold season last year, and we avoided most of the viruses that went through my kids’ school!

Elderberries have been used in folk medicine throughout history, so you don’t have to just take my word for it! If you still need convincing, there have been modern day studies done to prove that elderberry syrup and gummies do actually shorten the duration of common viruses!

elderberry syrup – you can use either store-bought or homemade elderberry syrup in this recipe. You can find high quality elderberry syrup at your local health food store. This elderberry syrup from Garden of Life is one of the best.

honeybuckwheat honey or manuka honey are the best types of honey to use for health purposes because they are higher in antioxidants than other kinds. But any honey will work in this elderberry gummy recipe.

gelatin – you could just use Knox gelatin from your local grocery store, but it will not benefit your hair and nails the way grass-fed gelatin powder will.

It’s safe to give elderberry gummies to children over the age of two due to the risk of choking in younger toddlers. It’s also not recommended to give honey to babies under 12 months old.

Elderberry gummies can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 months.

Prepare – Mix the gelatin and 1/4 cup of room temperature elderberry juice in a small bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes to “bloom”.

Heat – In a saucepan over low heat, heat remaining 1/4 cup of elderberry syrup until it is just starting to simmer. (not yet boiling)

Add the Remaining Ingredients – Remove saucepan from heat and add in honey and bloomed gelatin mixture. Stir until well combined.

Pour – Place the gummy molds on a cookie sheet or plate to keep them steady when you move them. Carefully pour the hot mixture into the gummy molds, using a spoon or eye dropper.

Let Sit – Refrigerate gummies for 2-3 hours, or until they are firm.

Store – Pop gummies out of their molds and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Variations – If you don’t have gummy molds, you can pour the gummy mixture into a 9 x 13 and cut it into shapes.

Substitutions – Maple syrup or agar agar can be used in place of honey but you will lose some of the health benefits that are in raw honey.
