Making homemade snow ice cream is one of my kids’ favorite Winter activities. First thing after we get a big snow storm, somebody runs out and scoops a bowl of perfect fluffy snow. We whisk up milk and maple syrup, add a dash of salt and vanilla.
That’s it! It’s so simple but such great fun!

What you need to make snow ice cream
ingredients
- Milk – Whole milk or heavy cream are my choice for this recipe. For a dairy free ice cream, use your favorite nut milk.
- Maple Syrup – I like to use maple syrup, but granulated sugar will work perfectly fine!
- Vanilla Extract (optional) – Adding vanilla makes this recipe in my opinion, but you can leave it out if you don’t have any on hand.
- Salt (optional) – A pinch of salt enhances the vanilla flavor.
- Snow – 8 cups of fresh clean snow.
How to make ice cream out of snow
Prep – Collect 8 heaping cups of fresh, clean undisturbed snow in a large mixing bowl.
Mix – In a medium size bowl, whisk 1 cup of milk, 1/2 cup of maple syrup, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla and a pinch of salt until well combined.
Add the Snow – Pour the milk mixture over the snow and fold it together with a spatula until it is all incorporated.
Tips for success
For Best Results – Because snow melts so quickly, it might be best to run scoop the snow after mixing the other ingredients together.
Don’t over mix the ingredients together so that you still get the crystallized texture of the snow.
To Serve – Top with sprinkles and enjoy your snow cream right away before it melts!
Substitutions – Granulated sugar or brown sugar can be used in place of maple syrup.
Variations – For a dairy free snow cream, use your favorite non-dairy milk in this recipe.
Enjoy snow cream at your own risk.

FAQ about making ice cream out of snow
Can you use any snow for making ice cream?
Only use perfectly clean, untouched snow that hasn’t been on the ground too long. The fluffier the better. Try to look for a drift to scoop your snow from.
Can I use non-dairy milk in this recipe?
Yes! You can swap out the milk for your favorite dairy-free milk.
Is snow ice cream safe to eat?
As long as you use fresh snow that is clean and untouched it should be perfectly fine to eat. Take into consideration whether or not the snow you’re choosing to scoop is close to a road where it could have been exposed to exhaust or road salt.
