This homemade chunky granola recipe is loaded with dates and pecans. Tastier and much healthier than store-bought, its delicious eaten as a cereal, sprinkled on yogurt or eaten plain!
When I was younger, my mom would make homemade granola all the time. So when I got married and had a little family of my own, I decided to try and make granola as well! I don’t know why, but I can never get my mom’s recipes to turn out right (maybe she wasn’t sticking to the recipe herself). My homemade granola had rock hard raisins and some burnt bits. Like, so hard your teeth felt like they might come out as you chewed! Frustrated, I gave up on making my own granola for a few years.
When I did, decide to try again, I was a few years more experienced in the kitchen and knew how to play around with ingredients. After trial and error, I came up with this homemade granola recipe with dates and pecans that my whole family is crazy about. If you love chunky granola with clusters, you have to give this a try! My kids eat it with homemade yogurt parfaits topped with fruit, in a bowl with milk or by the handful. The dates give it a really nice chewy texture and the big pieces of pecans are crispy and delicious.
This granola recipe makes a great “make ahead” breakfast option that you can feel good about giving your family.
Why Make Your Own Homemade Granola?
It takes less than an hour to make enough healthy granola for snacks and breakfasts for a week or two!
You know exactly what is in homemade granola made from scratch. If your family members have any food intolerances, you will know for sure if you are feeding them anything that will bother their tummies.
Most store-bought granola contains processed sugar and partially hydrogenated oils that can lead to heart disease. This homemade granola is sweetened with honey and maple syrup instead of granulated sugar. And coconut oil instead of vegetable oil.
When you make your own granola, its easy to swap out the spices, nuts and fruits for flavors you prefer.
How To Make Homemade Granola Clump
Baking homemade granola on a lower temperature so that it can bake longer to dry out better and clump up. Using enough honey also helps it to stick together.
Let the granola cool completely on the cookie sheet before breaking it into chunks.
