Making my own face wash has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. With my two pre-teen daughters and I using it twice a day, we go though store-bought face wash pretty fast!
This DIY face wash recipe is made with castile liquid soap and takes 2 minutes to whip together! I’ve been using it on a daily basis for the past year now and I still cannot get over how smooth it makes my skin feel after washing!
And the best part is you can customize the scent however you like using your favorite essential oil blends!

What You Need To Make Homemade Face Wash With Castile Soap:
ingredients
- castile soap – Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap is good for cleaning just about anything in a gentle and natural way. I use unscented castile soap for this recipe because it’s the most gentle on sensitive areas like around your eyes.
- almond oil – Its perfect for use on dry skin, especially in a face wash. Sweet almond oil contains vitamin A which is beneficial for treating acne-prone skin. If you don’t have almond oil another carrier oil like jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil work well as a substitute.
- essential oils – essential oils will add scent to the face wash as well as some benefits for your skin. More on that later in this post.
- rose water or distilled water – Rose water is known for being beneficial for the skin in many ways. It hydrates naturally, reduces the appearance of large pores, tightens the skin and provides antioxidant protection. To make this recipe more budget friendly, use distilled water instead.

Castile soap is good for cleaning just about anything including your body. Since its all natural and a powerful but gentle cleanser, castile soap is the perfect soap base for making homemade face wash that works for both dry and oily skin types!
For sensitive skin, use Dr. Bronner’s Unscented. I use to make all natural DIY baby wash too!
can you mix castile soap with essential oils
Yes, the easiest castile soap to mix with essential oils is Doctor Bronner’s unscented since the scents won’t have to compete with each other. Its easy to customize the smell of this soap with your favorite essential oils.
I do like to use orange castile soap since it smells fresh and sweet, and can be mixed with a variety of oils like, sweet orange, rose, vanilla or lavender essential oils.
How to Make This Homemade face wash recipe
- Mix all of the ingredients in a glass bottle with a soap pump lid.
- Shake well to combine.
Tips for success
To Use – Shake the soap dispenser bottle to evenly distribute the ingredients. Apply a small amount of foaming face wash using wet hands. Rub all over face, keeping out of your eyes. Rinse off with water.
Variations – For more sensitive skin types, substitute the orange castile soap with the fragrance free version.
Change up the scent of this face wash by swapping out the 20 drops of geranium essential oil with different oils that are beneficial to the skin.
To Store – Homemade face wash will last for a very long time when stored in a dark place in an air tight container.

Homemade Orange Blossom Face Wash With Castile Soap
This recipe for simple homemade foaming face wash is made with castile soap and smells like sweet orange blossoms. An easy all natural way to keep your skin feeling fresh and clean.
Materials
- 1 cup of Castile Soap
- 2 tablespoons Sweet Almond Oil
- 1/2 cup Rose Water or Distilled Water
- 20 drops Geranium Essential Oil
Tools
- Soap Dispenser
Instructions
- Combine all of the ingredients in the soap dispenser. Put the lid on and shake well to mix.
Notes
To Use - Apply a small amount of foaming face wash using wet hands. Rub all over face, keeping out of your eyes. Rinse off with water.

How many cups do you get from the rose water you linked? It says its a 4oz container, I know that’s half a cup but I find it hard to believe one ingredient alone would be 13 dollars just for one batch of the face wash

Hi! I would buy it at Target or Walmart instead. I linked it to Amazon just to show what Rose water is. Sorry about the price! You can also just use water to make it MUCH cheaper! Rose water is just a bonus for your skin but not at all necessary. I’ll update the post to say that though!

Hello! I am just starting to get into making my own natural products and I’ve seen your recipe for face cleanser. I have made my own face cleaner with distilled water, jojoba oil, Castile soap and essential oils. Looking more into it, I found that some things need preservatives if they contain water so now I’m getting discouraged thinking I’m making things wrong. Does my facial cleanser need any preservative since it contains distilled water or how long will it last before growing bacteria?

Hi! I’ve used distilled water in my facewash and it lasts a good several months without developing any kind of bacteria in it. I think as long as the water is purified in some way you should be ok.
Have you tried this using the rose castile soap instead of adding rose water? I’m not terribly fond of orange, but my tween daughter and I love rose. Would it work the same way for this recipe? Would it have the same benefits as the rose water?

Hi Tiffany! If your bathroom, or wherever you’ll be using your face wash is pretty sunny, I would use an amber bottle. If it’s not so sunny, you could use a clear bottle.

Hello! I have been using Castile soap for years and have never used this ratio. It seems like an amazing amount to Castile soap given the fact that it is very concentrated to begin with. I also usually use a foam soap dispenser and can make it go much further. A 1/2 cup would make me loads of dispensers!

You might have been sensitive to the essential oil so I would try leaving it out.
