what you need to make a baking soda air freshener:

  • Baking Soda – Or sodium bicarbonate is known for it’s ability to absorb odors, making a great non-toxic ingredient to use in an air freshener.
  • Essential Oils – The essential oils in this recipe will gently scent the area you keep this air freshener in. This is the brand of essential oils I use but feel free to use your favorite oils brand!
  • Lavender Buds (optional) – If you make a lavender air freshener, adding dried lavender buds will make your air freshener smell stronger and look prettier.
  • 4-ounce Mason Jar and Ring – Using a glass container is best since the essential oils will last longer in glass than plastic.
  • Fabric Scrap – You just need a 4in x 4in scrap of fabric or cheesecloth to use as a “lid” for the jar. The fabric is thin enough to let the bad smells into the jar and the good scent out.
  • Glue – To attach the fabric to the mason jar ring.

Tips for success:

To Use – Set your homemade air freshener anywhere you want to absorb bad odors or freshen the space.

It will work best in more enclosed places like the car, closets, bathroom, drawers or even the fridge.

To refresh the scent of your air freshener, just give it a shake from time to time. Toss and replace the baking soda and essential oils every 3 months, or whenever the scent has faded too much.

Substitutions – You can use whichever essential oils you love/have on hand. Keep it simple using just one oil, or get creative and make up your own fun blends!

about homemade baking soda air freshener:

made with only natural ingredients

Most of the products you find in the air freshener aisle at the store are made with harmful chemicals and have some really worrisome side effects such as respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, hormonal disruption and long term exposure can actually lead to cancer.

Essential oils are a great alternative to the artificial fragrances commonly used in commercial air fresheners because they’re completely natural.

Essential oils are concentrated extracts from flowers, herbs and other plants that contain many health benefits. They can relieve stress, help you to sleep better and even fight off fungal infections.

Easy To Make

All you have to do to make your own easy air freshener is add the two simple ingredients to a jar, make a quick and easy breathable lid. And that’s it!

Much Cheaper Than Store-bought room Freshener

It costs less than a dollar to make each jar of air freshener!

it leaves your home smelling fresh

Natural homemade air fresheners won’t smell as powerful and the scent won’t linger quite as long as commercial products do.

But in my opinion, having a more light, fresh scent is a small sacrifice to avoid filling the air with strong chemical smells!
